AVMA Tips for Pet Disaster Preparedness

Dr. Heather C. F. Case, American Veterinary Medical Association national coordinator of disaster preparedness and response, gives some tips and advice all pet owners should hear about the importance of making emergency plans that include house pets. Dr. Case experienced the affect a disaster can have first hand during cleanup efforts following Hurricane Katrina, and she currently works with the Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams (VMAT) that are responsible for responding to emergencies and disasters. Prior to coming to the AVMA, she deployed three times while working as a Region 5 VMAT member, gaining tremendous firsthand emergency response skills and experience.
